The Great Southern region is located on the south coast of Western Australia, adjoining the Southern Ocean, where the coast extends for approximately 250 kilometres. Bounded by the South West region on the west and Wheatbelt region to the north, the total land area of 39,007 square kilometres represents approximately 1.5 per cent of the state’s total area.
Southern Dirt has members throughout the Great Southern and has 3 main large hub situated in Kojonup, Darkan and Boyup Brook. Each of these hubs does trials in the surrounding areas up to 100kms in radius. The main infield research focus for the group currently is on broadacre trials for grains and livestock inclusive of farming systems, profitable breakcrops, pastures, soil constraints and much more.
We are also focusing on technology and to that end host Techspo every two years to educate and showcase technology to farmers throughout WA. To test these technologies we have set up two Smart Farms in the Katanning area, including one hosted by DPIRD at the Katanning Research Station.
The other main part of our research is focused on value add. We are working to create profit throughout the supply chain and in the process bring jobs to our local communities.
