Mouse Surveillance Project

Southern Dirt Inc. recently completed the second round of the Farmanco Mice Surveillance Project on July 3rd and 4th. Our Executive Officer and Project Officer assessed 10 surveillance sites in the Kojonup region. The results revealed minimal mouse activity, with only one site showing signs of presence and insignificant damage.

Our next key monitoring period will be in October, early spring, at the same 10 sites. We will continue to update site hosts on the mice population throughout the season.

Assessment Protocol:Â

Southern Dirt follows the CSIRO Mouse Surveillance Rapid Assessment Protocol. This involves:

  • Establishing transects at selected sites
  • Using chew cards pre-soaked in oil and marking burrows with cornflour
  • Checking chew cards the following day to assess mouse activity
  • Identifying active burrows by disturbances in the cornflour
